With the June long weekend just a day away, we thought it was the perfect excuse to celebrate a different kind of King Charlie.

Named after MT's son Charlie, this Eden Valley Shiraz has become one of the quiet achievers of the Garden Series. It sits high in Eden Valley, roughly 20 minutes drive from our Cellar Door in the west of Barossa. The site has consistently delivered a style of Shiraz that balances power with elegance, offering lifted aromatics, fine structure and the ability to age gracefully for many years.

We've assembled a special Charlie 6 Pack, featuring a selection of back vintages and current releases that showcase just how beautifully this wine evolves with time. The pack includes the rare inaugural 2015 vintage, now with a decade of bottle age, alongside a carefully chosen mix of mature releases ready to enjoy today and younger vintages that will reward further cellaring.

The best part? We've already done the waiting for you. Half the wines in this collection have close to ten years of age already under their belt, offering a fascinating glimpse into the journey of Charlie's Garden through the years.  The pack also includes vintages featuring both the original Charlie's Garden label design and the current.

This pack includes 1x bottle each of 2015, 2018, 2020 & 3x bottles of 2022

Tasting Notes

Charlie’s Garden is our expression of Eden Valley Shiraz, sourced from elevated vineyards on Menglers Hill where cooler conditions, quartz and gravelly loam soils, and surrounding gum trees help shape a wine of freshness, perfume and fine structure. Across vintages, Charlie’s Garden shows lifted aromatics of red and dark fruits, violet, spice, eucalyptus and subtle savoury notes, carried by bright natural acidity and a distinctly mineral line. The palate is focused and finely framed, with layers of blackberry, cherry, pepper and dried florals unfolding into silky tannins and a long, elegant finish. While generous enough to enjoy in its youth, Charlie’s Garden also has the balance and structure to develop beautifully with careful cellaring.

The Growing Season

2015
A fast, warm and compressed vintage, with Shiraz ripening early across South Australia. Eden Valley was a real bright spot in the season, producing Shiraz with excellent quality, lifted aromatics and the natural freshness we look for from the higher country.

2018
A strong, even and generous Eden Valley season, delivering Shiraz with depth, perfume and polished structure. Fruit from this vintage tends to show a lovely balance of dark berry character, spice and cool-climate lift.

2020
A very dry, low-yielding vintage across South Australia, but one that delivered exceptional quality where vine balance was carefully managed. Eden Valley Shiraz from 2020 carries concentration and intensity, shaped by small crops, soft ripening conditions and excellent flavour development.

2022
A cooler, La Niña-influenced season with good winter rainfall, mild summer conditions and no extreme heat events. The smaller crop gave Eden Valley Shiraz beautiful aromatics, bright fruit, balanced acidity and a fine, persistent structure.

Vinification

WINEMAKING | Fermented in a five tonne open top fermenter, with regular pump overs (twice daily over entire ferment) to control ferment, extract colour, flavour and tannins.

Average time ‘on skins’ was 10 days before the fermented juice was drained to tank and the pressings combined. The wine was then racked to barrel, where malolactic fermentation took place.
Charlie’s Garden was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

MATURATION | Aged for 16 months in 2-4 year old French oak hogsheads, with up to 20% new French oak.
