We’ve decided to dust off the Yesterday’s Hero label created in 2003 which hasn’t been seen since 2011. Adding a 100% Grenache back into The Picture Series again.

Yesterday’s Hero’ is a reference to a favourite John Paul Young song. He was once a gloried boxer but today, he is just Yesterday’s Hero. The reference here is to Grenache being used as the back bone to so many great bottlings in the 60’s and 70’s but rarely receiving any credit... until now! Grenache is back and fighting for its rightful place in the Australian wine scene, just like the boxer from the song.

Tasting Notes

COLOUR | Light garnet with a bright cherry-red hue.

AROMA | Highly expressive, showing lifted notes of lavender, mint, rosemary and potpourri, intertwined with pink peppercorn, Chinese five spice and delicate red berry fruits.

PALATE | A beautifully balanced, value for money, medium-bodied Grenache, offering flavours of strawberries and cream, wild red berries and violet florals. Subtle notes of cracked pepper and a hint of Australian game add complexity and savoury intrigue, while fine, talc-like tannins provide texture and structure. Fresh and vibrant throughout, the palate finishes long and fragrant with a seamless combination of fruit, spice and savoury character. Enjoy now for its youthful charm or cellar carefully over the next six to eight years.

The Growing Season

The 2025 McLaren Vale Grenache season followed a dry, low-yielding 12 months across South Australia, with an early and fast-moving harvest. While Barossa Valley, Eden Valley, Clare Valley and Adelaide Hills each carried their own challenges, McLaren Vale was a real bright spot, producing one of its strongest seasons in recent memory. Grenache from the Vale, particularly Blewitt Springs, showed excellent purity and lift, with small berries delivering concentration without heaviness. The wines are bright, fragrant and finely framed, showing red fruits, spice and supple tannin, with the natural freshness that makes McLaren Vale Grenache so appealing.

Vinification

WINEMAKING | Upon arrival at our Marananga winery the fruit it was left a few days to cold soak in 4-tonne round small batch fermenters, and was lightly plunged. Average time ‘on-skins’ was 12 days. All pressings were added back to the free run.

MATURATION | 12 months in a mix of French oak hogsheads and puncheons with 10-15% new oak.
