Two Hands Yacca Block Shiraz is a super premium Single Vineyard wine from the top of Menglers Hill in Eden Valley, showcasing the powerful role sub-regionality plays in serious winemaking. Although only a short drive from the western ranges of the Barossa Valley, this elevated site produces a markedly different expression of Shiraz, defined by elegance, perfume and fine structure.

The vineyard sits at high altitude, allowing for slow, even ripening and the development of beautifully detailed fruit. Its soils are a mix of quartz and ironstone, contributing mineral complexity, savoury depth and a refined tannin profile. This same exceptional site also supplies Shiraz for Charlie’s Garden and Riesling for The Boy, giving it a special place within the Two Hands portfolio.

In the glass, Yacca Block offers lifted aromatics, dark and red fruits, spice and mineral detail, with a soft, elegant palate, graceful power and impressive length that reflects its distinctive Eden Valley origin.

Tasting Notes

COLOUR | Deep magenta black

AROMA | A very tight bouquet of mint, blueberry & blackberry, dried herbs, Asian spice, Szechuan pepper, eucalypt, sage, cedar, timber & smoke.

PALATE | Rich blackcurrant and powerful dark fruits unfold, offering a glimpse of the wine’s structure, while a beautiful layering emerges. The tannins are fine and talcy, contributing to the incredible persistence and length of the finish, which remains perfectly balanced. This wine offers a thrilling, complex experience, not for the faint of heart. As with all our 2022 wines, there’s an inner core and a magical softness that makes this wine truly exceptional. It’s a wine with a big personality bold, yet multidimensional. Ultimately, the stony, mineral edge, a signature of Eden Valley, shines through. The late-palate is strong, seamless, and broad, offering great persistence. With the remarkable tannin structure, we are confident this wine will age beautifully, but is also drinking beautifully now for those who simply can not wait!

The Growing Season

After our second La Niña year in a row, the vineyards received an above average winter rainfall, we then progressed into a very mild spring and an equally mild summer with only one day recorded over 40°C. Due to slightly later flowering, the vines were set up to mature at a slower than usual pace, this put the start of vintage back around 3 weeks on average, these mild ripening conditions allowed for slower than usual favour development, this matched with lower yield across the board has resulted in another quality harvest.

Vinification

WINEMAKING | Crushed & de-stemmed on the 24th of March. Fermented in 5 tonne stainless. Time on skins 10 days, pumped over 2-3 times a day. Free run and pressings were combined into tank then racked off gross lees into oak where malolactic fermentation occurred. Bottled with minimal fining and without filtration.

MATURATION | 18 months in 1-6 year with 20% new French oak, puncheons. Bottled in November the following vintage.
