Two Hands Waterfall Block Shiraz is the newest addition to our Single Vineyard Series, sourced from a unique and compelling site close to the Adelaide CBD. This steep, complex vineyard needs to be seen to be believed, with many short, sharply angled rows shaped by the surrounding slopes and a remarkable natural microclimate.

Protected from early morning light by the highest point of the Mount Lofty Ranges behind it, and shielded again from the searing late-day sun by a steep hillside to the north, Waterfall Block allows its low-yielding vines to ripen slowly and evenly. The moving canopy and minimal vine stress help produce Shiraz with freshness, detail and striking regional character.

In the glass, Waterfall Block Shiraz offers lifted aromatics, dark and red fruits, spice, savoury complexity and fine structure. The label features Morialta’s First Falls, located only a short distance from the vineyard, reflecting the dramatic landscape behind this distinctive Single Vineyard release.

Tasting Notes

COLOUR | Purple with deep black core.

AROMA | An expressive, lifted perfume of strawberry, raspberry, dark cherry, potpourri, lavender, rose petal, dried strawberry and cranberry sit alongside cinnamon stick and five spice.

PALATE | Refined and beautifully balanced. Soft, gentle fruit arrives first, with blood plum, mulberry, blackberry and black cherry flowing across a silky, harmonious palate. The fruit absorbs the oak beautifully, revealing layers of iodine, graphite, char and sweet tobacco spice while retaining impressive brightness and clarity. A fine, creamy line of tannin gives shape without heaviness, becoming more apparent only through the dry, pretty back palate. Fine and resolved already, the tannins will integrate further with time in bottle, carrying the wine through a lingering finish of dark, dense red fruit.

The Growing Season

The 2023 vintage was one of the coolest, wettest and latest in Two Hands’ history. A wet winter and cold spring slowed early vine growth considerably, pushing the season several weeks behind normal before warmer conditions arrived in early summer. With a cooler ripening period ahead, yields were carefully managed and vineyard work focused on achieving healthy, open canopies and optimal fruit maturity. Harvest began in late March and continued through to 2 May, our latest finish on record. Careful picking decisions and patient winemaking proved crucial, resulting in wines of impressive quality and consistency, with excellent balance, freshness and a distinctive expression of this long, cool growing season.

Vinification

WINEMAKING | The small parcel from this unique single block was picked and crushed on the 25th of March. De-stemmed into a stainless steel fermenter. The time spent on skins was 12 days. All free run and pressings were combined. Then moved to barrel, where malolactic fermentation occurred. The wine was bottled with minimum fining and no filtration.

MATURATION | 18 months in up to 50% new French oak and 2/3 year old hogsheads. Bottled in November the following vintage.

"The 2022 Waterfall Block Waterfall Gully Road Burnside Shiraz is floral and aromatic, with strawberries and cranberry, pomegranate andgarden roses. In the mouth, the wine is shaped by a profusion of tannin, but it retains some levity in its prettiness. A lovely wine, groundedand fresh. The tannins are pliable and ductile, plentiful but chewy. So far, I am preferring the 2022s to the bigger, more robust 2021s."
