Two Hands Coach House Block Shiraz is the original wine in our Single Vineyard Series, sourced from an estate-grown vineyard near the tiny hamlet of Greenock in the Barossa Valley. Purchased in 2001 and formerly known as the Branson Coach House, this vineyard holds an important place in the Two Hands story.

Across its 18 acres of Barossa Valley Shiraz, one particular block has continually stood apart. Known internally as Highway Block, this special section of the vineyard has consistently shown Single Vineyard quality during our blind tasting barrel trials, earning its place as a dedicated release year after year.

In the glass, Coach House Block Shiraz is a deeply expressive wine, with dark fruit, spice, savoury detail and the richness expected from Greenock Shiraz. Structured, generous and full of character, it reflects both the strength of the site and the careful selection process behind the Two Hands Single Vineyard Series.

Tasting Notes

COLOUR | Dense red to black.

AROMA | Coconut, vanilla and cigar smoke lead into blackberries, cassis and plum, layered with dark chocolate, earth, woodsmoke, sweet oak spice and blackcurrant pastille.

PALATE | The palate opens with a flowing, sweet core of rich, boisterous fruit. Boysenberry and blackberry liqueur characters unfold through a dense layer of preserved dark fruits, expressing the quintessential power of Barossa Valley Shiraz. With air, more complex notes of dark chocolate, baking spice, cherry chocolate and black pepper emerge. Full-bodied and deeply concentrated, the wine’s lavish fruit and oak are held in harmony by fine-edged tannins. A bright acid line, characteristic of the 2023 single-vineyard releases, gives definition and extends its cellaring potential beyond other recent vintages. Built for many years of evolution, yet already delicious to enjoy now.

The Growing Season

The 2023 vintage was one of the coolest, wettest and latest in Two Hands’ history. A wet winter and cold spring slowed early vine growth considerably, pushing the season several weeks behind normal before warmer conditions arrived in early summer. With a cooler ripening period ahead, yields were carefully managed and vineyard work focused on achieving healthy, open canopies and optimal fruit maturity. Harvest began in late March and continued through to 2 May, our latest finish on record. Careful picking decisions and patient winemaking proved crucial, resulting in wines of impressive quality and consistency, with excellent balance, freshness and a distinctive expression of this long, cool growing season.

Vinification

WINEMAKING | Several small parcels from the Coach House vineyard were picked on the 21st of April. Crushed and de-stemmed into open top fermenters and pressed once dry, with an average time on skins of 10 days. All free run and pressings were combined in tank and then racked off to gross lees into barrel to go through malolatic fermentation. The wine was bottled with minimum fining and no filtration.

MATURATION | 18 months in up to 50% new French oak and 2/3 year old hogsheads. 4 barrels bottled in November the following vintage.

"The 2023 Coach House Block Seppeltsfield Road Greenock Shiraz is spicy and fine on the nose, showing rose petals and pomegranate, wet asphalt and graphite. The tannins are silky and silty, framing the fruit beautifully through the lingering finish. The 2023 season was cool and wet, imbuing these wines with levity and delicacy. They wear it well."
