Two Hands Spirit of Place Ebenezer Shiraz is a special Single Vineyard Shiraz sourced from a 103-year-old vineyard in Ebenezer, in the far northern reaches of the Barossa Valley. The name Spirit of Place refers to the unique, distinctive and cherished qualities that define a vineyard, a region and the people who have cared for it over time.

Settled in 1852, Ebenezer has been farmed by generations of families for more than 150 years. This historic sub-region experiences warm summer days and cool nights, with deep red-brown clay loam soils of consistent texture and depth. These conditions produce Shiraz with richness, power, opulent late-palate weight and velvety tannins.

Produced fpr the first time from the exceptional 2021 vintage, Spirit of Place stands tall as a commanding expression of northern Barossa Shiraz whilst reflecting its old vine heritage. It is layered, powerful and deeply regional, capturing the history, character and enduring strength of Ebenezer.

Tasting Notes

COLOUR | Deep concentrated black in colour

AROMA | Complex aromas of earth, tar, wood fire, smoke, moss rock, mint, dried herb and sautéed plums complete the picture.

PALATE | The dense and layered fruits take off like a rocket in your mouth. The acid and tannins take off, chasing after the fruits trying to reign it all in, and what a job it does.

My favourite aspect of this wine is the finish. It motors along into the late palate with a whiplash of chocolate and rich berried fruits, singing along slowly.

This wines’ evolution in the cellar has been very interesting to capture over the past 18 months, I have shared a love/hate relationship with this bottling, always hoping it would live up to its early promise in barrel. I am very happy that now, post bottling it has exceeded my expectations... wow! This is simply delicious and shows the magic that only a truly great 100+ year old vineyard can possess. Lock and load, be brave and cellar this bottling for 15+ years and it will age at a snail’s pace, this is a richly rewarding adventure.

The Growing Season

The 2021 Barossa Valley vintage was a beautifully balanced season for Shiraz. Good winter rainfall, particularly from August through October, helped build strong soil moisture reserves, while a moderate spring encouraged even shoot growth, clean flowering and well-structured canopies. Unlike the eastern states, South Australia avoided the heavy La Niña rainfall, and the Barossa moved through summer with calm, even conditions and only one day above 40°C. This allowed Shiraz to ripen slowly and evenly, preserving natural acidity while building flavour, colour and fine tannin. A well-timed rain event in late February refreshed the vines and carried the fruit through to full maturity without stress. The resulting Spirit of Place Barossa Valley Shiraz shows the hallmarks of a great Barossa vintage: depth, purity, generous dark fruit, balanced structure and a long, composed finish, with both immediate appeal and excellent cellaring potential.

Vinification

The fruit was fermented for 18 days on skins. Allowed to run dry, pressed off. Matured for 18 months in new and second use French Oak hogsheads.

"The 2021 Spirit of Place Shiraz hails from 103-year-old vines in the Barossa Valley. Aromatically, it leads with masses of black berry fruit,cherry, licorice, dark chocolate and star anise. In the mouth, the wine is inky and thick, the tannins embedded so deeply into the fruitthat it is a challenge to determine where they start and finish. It is undeniably excellent, with black, silty tannins that settle, rather theinhibit. This comes from Ebenezer in Barossa, planted in 1918. It's an astounding wine."
