Inspired by the myths of ancient Greece the Flagship Series is headed by our Ares Shiraz. Aerope, a mortal princess and lover of Ares, represents the very best Grenache parcels crafted each vintage.

Deep and concentrated on the palate with bouncy and very expressive dark fruits, the flow here is admirable, this gives a burst of fruit and then it hit another gear and keeps flowing.

Wow there is a lot to like here, layers of deep concentrated fruits flow and flow. It holds it's line and length so well and is in a way big but gentle.

Tasting Notes

COLOUR | Bright red to deep red in the glass.

AROMA | Soft and gentle aromas of liquorice, rhubarb, cherry, red berry preserve, potpourri, warm earth and clove.

PALATE | The palate is focused, textured with broad layers of fruit that slowly becomes exposed, black raspberry flavours dominate which are backed by some bitter cherries, this wine takes time in a decanter to start to fit together. There is a lovely juiciness that engulfs the palate, this builds focus as the tannins come into play.

That juiciness holds it shape right to the end of the palate when some iodine inflected tannins gently take over, offering minerality to the soft and stony finish. This wine has such a great core of ripe, deep concentrated fruits that exemplifies Barossa Grenache, that it will age slowly and effortlessly. It’s been built for the long haul.

The Growing Season

The 2020 vintage faced severe drought, with the Barossa Valley experiencing its driest winter since 1912. Despite low yields, innovative water-saving measures, including Sap Flow monitoring, helped manage resources. A hot January was followed by ideal ripening conditions in February and March. Picking was challenging due to variability across vineyards, requiring close monitoring. The Holy Grail vineyard delivered 132 tonnes of high-quality fruit, and improvements in winemaking processes under new Chief Winemaker Richard Langford led to excellent juice quality. Though yields were down over 50%, 2020 is remembered as one of the best vintages in terms of wine quality.
