From the same 2017 vintage and the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs, this 6-pack features  two single vineyard Grenache expressions, Moritz and Schuller. Grown just kilometres apart, Moritz is all lifted red fruits and silky texture, while Schuller shows darker fruit and savoury depth. A unique showcase of two growers, one region, and one great vintage.

This 6-pack contains 3 bottles each of the following wines:

  • 2017 Twelftree Schuller - Blewitt Springs Grenache
  • 2017 Twelftree Moritz - Blewitt Springs Grenache

MORITZ - 97 POINTS
"Hand-picked from dry-grown bushvines, destemmed, not crushed, wild-fermented with 15% whole bunches, 13 days on skins, light pressings. An utterly delicious grenache with only one problem: the total production was 50 dozen. Supple, fine, silky - tastes more like 13.5% alcohol than 14.5%." - James Halliday, Published 21 March 2022

SCHULLER - 94 POINTS
"Hand-picked from 89yo dry-grown bushvines, destemmed, not crushed, fermented with 15% whole bunches, 13 days on skins, matured in French and stainless steel puncheons.  A high quality grenache." James Halliday, Published 21 March 2022

Tasting Notes

MORTIZ:
An intriguing bouquet of fresh moss, wet rocks, lavender, tea leaves, mint, dry herbs and tomato stems lift slowly from the glass.

SCHULLER:
The bouquet grabs your attention straight from the first whiff, with notes of roasted meats, cherry, rhubarb, fresh cut flowers, potpourri, lavender and menthol.

These wines will be best drunk after decanting and will reward 10 to 15 years in the cellar.

The Growing Season

The 2017 Grenache growing season in McLaren Vale was characterised by a delayed start due to a cool and wet spring, followed by a dry and extended ripening period. This resulted in a longer hang time, pushing harvest dates well into late April.

With winemakers able to pick fruit as needed during extended autumn. The wines are described as having excellent quality, with a focus on softness and elegance rather than big powerhouses.

SCHULLER:

Technical Information

MORITZ:
Of all the sites we farm for this project, Moritz is one of the most interesting. The vineyard is situated on a large 15 acres parcel of old Grenache that rests on a south facing slope with amazing aspect. Our grapes come from a smaller section that is based on shallower layers of clay, which controls the vigour and architecture of the vines and allows us to work very naturally with this block. As the vines age the yield get smaller and more concentrated. This is a large, darker, and more plush example of Blewitt Springs when compared to its older brother, the Schuller Grenache.

SCHULLER:
This vineyard is a very special and magical place, 500 odd vines based at the top of the Blewitt Springs range. Planted in the 1930s, they just sit there looking so happy and peaceful; the site is beautiful and always mesmerising to visit.

These old vines have seen it all and self regulate their canopy and crop, year in and year out. We always find this wine amazingly complex on the bouquet and love the refinement and poise of its fine and succulent tannins.
