The Coach House Block Shiraz comes from an Estate grown single vineyard near the tiny hamlet of Greenock in the Barossa Valley. Purchased in 2001, the Coach House vineyard (formally known as the Branson Coach House) produces exceptional Barossa Valley Shiraz, but one block amongst the 18 acres of vineyard has continually proven to be special. Known internally as Highway Block, this special block has consistently come up as Single Vineyard quality each vintage, during our blind tasting barrel trials.

Tasting Notes

COLOUR | Dense black with red edges.

AROMA | A very strong bouquet Christmas cake, prunes, raisins, cassis, tobacco, apricot, nutmeg, cinnamon, grandmas blackberry jam. incense, bark and fresh plum.

PALATE | The palate opens with a flowing, sweet core of rich, boisterous fruits that initially seem impenetrable. Flavours of boysenberry and blackberry liqueur unfold, wrapped in a dense, layer of preserved fruits. The massive fruit presence harmonises beautifully with the underlying structure, showcasing the quintessential character of Barossa Valley Shiraz from the Western Ranges. With a bit of air, the wine evolves further, revealing spice notes of dark chocolate, caramel slice, baking spice. This is a wine that will continue to evolve, offering immense enjoyment for many years to come with its great density. Or, drink now!

The Growing Season

Our Estate vineyards Holy Grail and Branson Coach House performed brilliantly in the 2021 growing season. The medium size crop ripened slowly and perfectly, we were able to process each clone and batch separately and this gave us a large amount of blending options for our very best wines.

Vinification

WINEMAKING | Several small parcels from the Coach House vineyard were picked on the 21st of April. Crushed and de-stemmed into open top fermenters and pressed once dry, with an average time on skins of 10 days. All free run and pressings were combined in tank and then racked off to gross lees into barrel to go through malolatic fermentation. The wine was bottled with minimum fining and no filtration.

MATURATION | 18 months in up to 50% new French oak and 2/3 year old hogsheads. 4 barrels bottled in November the following vintage.
