New Releases: 2023 Single Vineyard Series

Each year, our Single Vineyard Series tells the story of place. Six individual vineyards, six unique expressions of Shiraz, and six wines that capture the nuances of site, and vineyards that have a bit of x-factor. The 2023 vintage is no exception.

The 2023 growing season was one of the coolest in recent Barossa history. Patience in picking decisions was rewarded with wines of exceptional perfume, detail and natural balance. Rather than power alone, this vintage is defined by elegance and freshness.

The Return of Kraehe House Block

Perhaps the most exciting story of the 2023 release is the return of Kraehe House Block, the vineyard located at Neldner Road, Marananga.

The Kraehe House Block is more than just another vineyard in our portfolio. It is quite literally home. Planted in the early 2000's when the restoration of our Cellar Door house was being completed, this estate block runs parallel to the old bakehouse and Cellar Door lawn & garden many of you have wandered through when visiting us here in Marananga.

Named in honour of Friedrich Wilhelm Fritz Kraehe, one of the original settlers of Marananga, the vineyard connects our present to the early European history of the western Barossa. The site itself sits on classic western ridge soils, that naturally moderate vigour and encourage small berries with concentrated flavour and structure. The fruit consistently shows depth, dark plum and blackberry characters, layers of spice and a fine mineral line that speaks clearly of place.

We first bottled the Kraehe House Block as a standalone wine in 2013. It was a small release and one that quietly built a following. Since then the vineyard has continued to mature, its roots driving deeper, its character becoming more defined.

We are proud to bring it back into the Single Vineyard Series, adding yet another estate-grown Shiraz to the collection. For us, this wine represents a full circle moment. Estate fruit, grown steps from where our team welcomes guests each day, crafted with the same focus and precision that defines our Single Vineyard wines. It is Marananga in its purest form and a reminder that sometimes the most compelling stories are growing right outside your door.

The highest-rated wine in this year's collection, Yacca Block once again showcases why this remarkable Eden Valley vineyard continues to be one of our finest sites. Perched atop Mengler's Hill at approximately 500 metres above sea level, the vineyard's elevation, cool climate and pink quartz and ironstone soils produce a wine of striking minerality and finesse.

Yacca Block – 97 Points
Menglers Hill, Eden Valley Shiraz
The 2023 Yacca Block Menglers Hill Shiraz hails from what feels like the top of the world—it's really just the top of Mengler's Hill, but the view is spectacular, offering perspective on the rest of the Barossa Valley floor and some of the Eden Valley too. The site is elevated—around 500 meters above sea level, if memory serves correctly—and windswept, and all of it becomes evident in the wine. Pink quartz and ironstone in the soils play their part too. Aromatically, the wine leads with raspberry leaf tea, fresh mint leaf and tapenade, while the palate shows a very attractive suppleness of tannin. While the wine is certainly plush, it shows an inherent minerality and rockiness, and this is perhaps one of my favorite aspects of Eden Valley—its connection to ground. 14.2% alcohol, sealed under Diam." 2023 Yacca Block - 96 points
Mengers Hill, Eden Valley Shiraz
"Shiraz sourced from Menglers Hill; shallow, skeletal grey sand loam with quartz gravel over weathered rock and yellow clay. Deep magenta/crimson with characters of ripe satsuma plum and dark and red cherry fruits cut with hints of baking spices, roasting meats, crushed quartz, violets, bay leaf, cold tea, sage, dark chocolate and earth. Full bodied, with a fine, bright acid driveline, powdered granitic tannins and wonderfully ripe plum and cherry fruits on the finish that stretch out nicely, showing impressive sustain and structural integrity." 2023 Coach House Block - 96 points
Seppeltsfield Road, Greenock, Barossa Valley Shiraz
"The 2023 Coach House Block Seppeltsfield Road Greenock Shiraz is spicy and fine on the nose, showing rose petals and pomegranate, wet asphalt and graphite. The tannins are silky and silty, framing the fruit beautifully through the lingering finish. The 2023 season was cool and wet, imbuing these wines with levity and delicacy. 2023 Holy Grail - 95+ points
Seppeltsfield Road, Barossa Valley Shiraz
"An impressive deeply fruited shiraz sourced from a slice of the Two Hands estate in Seppeltsfield. Super dark crimson with ripe blackberry, satsuma plum and black cherry fruits layered with baking spices, dark chocolate, cedar, pan juices, panforte, ironstone and earth. There's a solid swell of black fruit on the palate, perhaps a touch of pastille lift, with a base of thick, silty tannin and a surprising freshness considering the fruit density and power. 2023 Kraehe House Block - 95+ points
Nelnder Road, Marananga, Barossa Valley Shiraz
" A deeply fruited, impressive shiraz sourced from the western subregion of Marananga. Deep magenta/purple with bold doris plum, blackberry and blueberry fruits with hints of baking spices, licorice, dark chocolate, Christmas cake, ironstone, violets, cedar, olive tapenade and earth. Full bodied, with a sense of latent power, ripe, succulent fruit and dense, fine-grained tannins, plus a long draw of blackberry and blueberry fruit on the finish. 2023 Secret Block - 96 points

"The 2023 Secret Block Wildlife Road Moppa Hills Shiraz is floral, depicting rose petals and pomegranate, cedar and violets. The palate shows immense structure, and yet it does so with finesse. 2023 Secret Block - 95 points
Wildlife Road, Moppa Hills, Barossa Valley Shiraz
"A deeply coloured, powerful shiraz from the northern subregion of Moppa, with its deep grey-red loams studded with coarse quartz and ironstone gravel over clay; matured for 18 months in French oak, up to 50% new. Deep, impenetrable crimson with aromas of blackberry, damson plum and blueberry fruits with underlying baking spices, olive tapenade, blackforest cake, dark chocolate bullets, pan juices, ironstone and earth. Full bodied, with a sleek cremé-de-cassis fruit flow, compact, silty, ferruginous-edged tannins and a blackberry pastille brightness to the acidity." 2023 Waterfall Block - 95 points
Waterfall Gully Road, Burnside, Adelaide Shiraz
"It's called Waterfall Block for a reason; the vines are horizontally planted on an incredulously steep slope that begs belief. It's a beautiful wine, with harmonious composition, the fruit – blood plum, mulberry, blackberry, black cherry – greedily soaking up the oak. Iodine, some graphite and char, sweet tobacco spice sewn in, yet the brightness and clarity of its fruit retains the final say through the finish.
