June News 2025

Welcome to the June Edition of Instinctively Curious, the Two Hands Newsletter.

We’re especially happy to greet you this month with some long-awaited good news, after many dry months, the rain has finally arrived! The much-needed moisture has refreshed the landscape and our vineyards. Even more exciting: a brand-new website is on the horizon! (or if you're reading this after June, this is it!) We’re putting the finishing touches on it now, and we can’t wait to share it with you in July. Expect easier navigation, beautiful updates, and a smoother buying experience overall.

IN THE VINEYARD

Our Holy Grail vineyard finally received a generous 32mm of rain over three days, much to everyone’s (and the vines’) relief. With the ground softened and refreshed, the team has been hard at work fertilising the blocks and ripping selected areas to help air and water reach the deeper, more compacted soil. Chip, Peter’s loyal dog, is absolutely loving it, digging to his heart’s content in the freshly turned earth.

Meanwhile, over at our Kraehe Block next to Cellar Door, Lara is quietly helping with the crafting of something special for summer. She’s been busy planting trees and a variety of native flora to support our onsite beehives. We can’t wait to show you what’s coming.

IN THE WINERY

While vintage is one of the busiest times of the year, the work doesn’t slow down once the fermenters are emptied. Richard and assistant winemaker Jett have been hard at work tasting and classifying barrels from the 2025 vintage. This crucial process involves assessing barrel samples from both our estate and grower vineyards to determine the best home for each wine. Each sample is carefully documented, with dozens tasted daily from small glass vials and yes, their stained teeth are a clear sign of dedication!

Also, to add to the busy activity! Quinn, Richard’s Springer Spaniel, is expecting puppies! We’re about two weeks away from welcoming a very cute new litter to the Two Hands family. We’ll be sure to share the puppy joy when they make their debut.

AT CELLAR DOOR

With the cooler weather settling in, most of our tastings have moved indoors (unless you are very lucky to visit on a sunny day to be out on the deck!). This makes weekend bookings essential as space fills up quickly in our small cottage. The fireplace is lit daily, creating the perfect setting to settle in with a glass of Shiraz and soak up the warmth.

Our current tasting flight features something special: the 2021 Ziggy’s Block from Greenock, right here in the Barossa. It’s rich, structured, and ready to impress. Vanessa and the team are here to welcome you. See you soon!

Mark your calendars for next month! July 25th is Shiraz Day, a cherished annual highlight in the Two Hands calendar. As Shiraz specialists, it’s a day we celebrate with pride, passion, and of course, a great glass in hand. We just might be dipping into the museum… keep an eye out for a museum release that honours the depth of our favourite varietal. Watch this space!

WINE OF THE MONTH
2021 Ziggy’s Block

The first non-Shiraz wine added to the Single Vineyard Series lineup since 2014. Ziggy’s Block Cabernet Sauvignon, named after MT’s Dachshund & best mate Ziggy. This Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from a grower’s vineyard in the western village of Greenock and was suggested to us as showing Single Vineyard potential by good friends & neighbours Paulmara.

MT says; “Deep impenetrable black in colour. Intoxicating aromas of bay leaf, fresh liquorice, clove, nutmeg, blood orange, black fruits, graphite, pomegranate and menthol.”

The palate is immediately thick, luscious and coating, this wine moves slowly through your mouth with a real swagger. A rich core of deep, dark fruits seamlessly unfurls along the complete length of your palate, this is a wine not for the faint hearted with a kaleidoscope of colours and reflections. The most remarkable aspect of this wine is its enduring length, its mirrors Ziggy’s shape (he is a Dachshund) as the body of the wine is over extended and incredibly long. The tannins are seamless and amazingly unnoticeable at first, on later reflection they are so full of fruit that they simply reverberate all over the place. Wow, this is stunningly brilliant Cabernet Sauvignon and it will reward the people with the patience to age it.

Morgan is a country SA native, growing up in the spectacular Flinders Ranges. She’s studied Media and Communications with a specialisation in travel and tourism. She is our resident green thumb and specialist in succulents, having a large collection that almost equals her vast collection of vinyl records. Morgan is also an avid royal watcher and is an expert in all things QEII and wishes Cody Rhodes & Rhea Ripley were her neighbours. Morgan’s attention to detail and friendly and quirky personality keeps the Two Hands team always entertained and on our toes.

How did you get into marketing?
I first got into marketing thanks to a Year 12 teacher who suggested that media and marketing would suit my strengths. I’d always been drawn to branding, design, and the creativity behind advertising, so that push from her made me choose to study comms at Uni .

Where do you get inspiration for the amazing content on Two Hands socials?
A lot of the inspiration comes from hours of scrolling Instagram. Constantly diving into what other wineries are doing, what they’re not doing, and how we can bring a fresh angle to it. But we don’t just stay in the wine lane, we’re always looking at industries like fashion, F1, lifestyle brands… anyone who’s telling stories in creative, bold ways. Then we take those big ideas and ask, “How would Two Hands do it?” That’s where the magic happens, adapting them to our own voice, then Brad helps me execute my crazy ideas!

Who’s your favourite Two Hands pup?
Chip! Love that little guy! He’s got the swag, the soft fluff, and he’s always happy to see everyone at Marananga when he comes in. Outside the Two Hands doggos I do love one of the new little calves out at Holy Grail, she’s a rich chocolate brown with what looks like a platinum blonde wig on top, so cute!

Fave food and wine match?
Panfried dumplings with a good chilli sauce and a buttery, round Chardonnay. Or let’s be honest, it’s me, so anything with Chardonnay, perf! Lucky we have Hell Freezes Over, or shout out to Swings & Roundabouts in Margaret River if having a Chardonnay outside of SA.
