What a difference a couple of generations can make. In the mid 1980s South Australia’s old Grenache, Mourvèdre and Shiraz vines were being removed due to a lack of demand. Brave Faces is a tribute to the men and women that loyally tended their vineyards, allowing them to remain intact today.

"Brave faces face the boardroom, the oak stained walls fall silent, they leave lined with defeat, and they got those tears in their eyes, well it makes no sense to me."
- Brave Faces MIDNIGHT OIL, 1981

Tasting Notes

COLOUR | Deep red with bright edges, youthful and vibrant in the glass.

AROMA | Lifted notes of dark plum, mulberry and raspberry compote mingle with savoury spice, cracked pepper, and a whisper of dried herbs. Subtle hints of lavender, charcuterie and earth sit in the background, adding depth and intrigue.

PALATE | The palate is vibrant and juicy from the first sip, with Grenache driving waves of red fruits, cherry, raspberry and a touch of pomegranate. Mourvèdre folds in savoury layers of dried spice, leather and earthy depth, giving the wine shape and persistence. The subtle inclusion of Shiraz adds a gentle spine of black pepper and dark fruit, tightening the mid-palate and lending a flicker of spice on the finish. The overall impression is one of brightness and balance. Supple red fruits glide over fine tannins, finishing long, fresh and moreish. Drink young for its vibrancy, or cellar 5–7 years to see the spice and savoury notes develop further.

The Growing Season

Grenache thrived in the warm, dry Barossa 2024 vintage. The early budburst and small crops set the stage for berries with terrific concentration. The warm, dry summer kept disease pressure at bay, and the small, thick skinned berries developed deep colour and lifted aromatics.By harvest, Grenache stood out across the region as one of the real success stories of the year, wines showing vivid perfume, fine natural tannins, and a balance of juiciness and spice that promises immediate charm as well as cellaring potential.

Vinification

WINEMAKING | The three separate fruit batches were de-stemmed and crushed to open top fermenters. The Shiraz was pumped over three times daily, where as the Grenache and Mourvèdre, after a few days cold soak, were lightly plunged.

Average time ‘on skins’ was 6 days. Grenache
parcels were fermented with 20% whole bunches. All pressings were added back to the free run. Some barrels had extended lees contact through maturation.

MATURATION | 12 months in a mix of French oak hogsheads and puncheons with 10-15% new oak.
