2017 Halliday Wine Companion Reviews

Launching the first week of August in 2016, the 2017 Halliday Wine Companion has seen the release of over 9,000 reviews and tasting notes, including a handful of Two Hands releases.

With 23 scores between 96 and 90 points, as well as retaining our status as a ‘Five Red Star Winery’, Two Hands are proud to be featured in the publication amongst some of Australia’s best wineries.

2014 Secret Block Wildlife Road Moppa Hills Barossa Valley Shiraz

Quite superb. Revs of tannin, blooms of dark-berried fruit, smoky nuances, woody spice, malt. It builds and flows, layers and lingers. Structure, flavour, interest, length – this excels at them all.

2014 Bella’s Garden Barossa Valley Shiraz

Bang on. A beauty. Thick with fruit, sturdy with tannin, and complex enough to suggest an interesting future. Colour here is a pool of ink; balance is such that you don’t think about it; and fruit-drenched length is a non-issue, to say the least.

2014 Sophie’s Garden Padthaway Shiraz

The full biscuit. This has the X-factor and more. It’s brilliant with sweet, syrupy plum, mint and clove-like flavours, though mostly it prevents as seamless. The shape of this wine, the firm-but-integrated structure, the length: this does it darndest to steal the ‘Garden Series’ show.

2014 Mystic Block Benbournie Road Armagh Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Drastically rich and, to boot, beautifully polished. This is a cracking wine. Earth, bitumen, blackcurrant, eucalypt, and dusty clove notes smoke their way through a seriously concentrated palate. Tannin uncurls slowly but surely. Everything here is in a good place.

2015 The Boy Eden Valley Riesling

Thrilling acidity, with the flavour and length to match. Cellaring classic. Elegant but intense. Bath salts, citrus, mineral. Slight spritz as a positive.

2014 Gnarly Dudes Barossa Valley Shiraz

Bright hue and depth; the bouquet is fragrant and complex, with red fruits, spice and pine needles floating somewhere in the background, the elegant palate lifted and freshened by the low alcohol. The wine will outlive the patience of most who purchase it, but a drink-now decision is no crime.

2014 Wazza’s Block Seppeltsfield Road Seppeltsfield Barossa Valley Shiraz

The stated alcohol gives no clear indication of the wine. This is dark, squishy, and super intense, the boom of the berries pushing flavour to the limits of freshness, but not beyond. It works, like magic, like escapism, like a world unto itself.

2013 Lily’s Garden McLaren Vale Shiraz

Whatever pretensions the Langhorne Creek or Barossa Valley siblings of this wine might have had to adapt, some of the clothing (chocolate) of McLaren Vale are blown out of the water by this wine, its river of black and nut chocolate flowing insistently through the palate from start to finish. As a lover of chocolate, I am smitten by this wine.

2013 Bella’s Garden Barossa Valley Shiraz

Deep colour; a richly robed medium to full-bodied wine, with strong textural play the moment the wine enters the mouth; there are black fruits, plum cake and licorice in abundance; both the tannin and oak contributions are well controlled.

2014 Angels’ Share McLaren Vale Shiraz

While there are no half measures with the weight or the shape of this wine, it has a touch of elegance running alongside its blackberry, blood plum, and dark chocolate fruit; the tannins wait until the last moment, joining forces with the oak to speak clearly of the long future ahead.

2014 Yacca Block Menglers Hill Eden Valley Shiraz

Squeaky clean blueberry and blackberry fruit flavours combine well with smoky, spicy oak. Balance here is spot on. Tannin is so fine you could play music on it. Length takes care of it.

2014 Lily’s Garden McLaren Vale Shiraz

Hearty offering with warm blackberry pie and saltbush-like flavours filling the palate to the hilt. This won’t ever be skipped over unremarked. What really elevates it, though, is the frame of tannin, which stands firm, dry, ferrous and commanding.

2014 Dave’s Block Blewitt Springs McLaren Vale Shiraz

Inky colour and flavour. It’s Shiraz cut in thick, meaty slices. It taste of saturated plums, cloves and malty/toasty oak, and comes twirled with ripe spicy tannin. Flaws, it has none.

2014 Max’s Garden Heathcote Shiraz

The fruit is sweet and dense. The tannin a melt throughout, the oak downplayed but at one with the fruit. The fruit profile tends towards jamminess, regardless of the stated alcohol, but for sheer it’s-all-there-on-its-sleeve seduction this takes some beating. This is where simple meets saucy.

2013 Samantha’s Garden Clare Valley Shiraz

The play revolves around blackberry and blackcurrant fruit, with balances, savoury display of earthy tannins; oak is certainly present, but not as insistent as it is in most of it’s siblings; medium-bodied, and very well structured and balanced.
