INSTINCTIVELY CURIOUS – September News

As spring breathes new life into our vineyards,
we’re delighted to bring you the freshest updates from the team.

With blossoms & bud burst in full swing showing the promise of a vibrant growing season ahead.

Welcome to the September edition of Instinctively Curious, the Two Hands monthly newsletter. This spring edition we delve into the new growth in the vineyard that is exploding across the region as the warmer weather arrives. News shoots on the vines offer the promise of the vintage ahead, the golden yellow of the canola fields brighten the region and the blossom on the almond and apple trees provide a kaleidoscope of colour.

This month we showcase the release of the 2016 My Hands Shiraz, the pinnacle of our wine production. This storied and rare release is meticulously made from a selection of only the absolute best of our Barossa Shiraz.

We are also releasing the first of our 2024 wines, the always popular Trusty Rusty Rose. With a pale blush of colour, this Barossa Grenache based wine is a wonderfully fresh and fruit driven style, perfect for the coming summer. Read more below and order a six pack today.

We are also excited to announce that in our ongoing efforts to provide more flexibility for our members we have recently added Afterpay as a payment option. If you wish to use this option simply select Afterpay at checkout for easy one-click checkout. For now Afterpay is only available online and not for in-person orders at cellar door or via other means. If this changes in the future we will let you know!

2016 MY HANDS

Review by Joe Czerwinski for Wine Advocate | 99 POINTS
“A special selection of Shiraz from the Holy Grail vineyard in Seppeltsfield, the 2016 My Hands is an infrequently made, ultra-luxe offering. If you have to ask the price…. After two years in French oak hogsheads (and another couple in bottle prior to release), it’s extravagantly perfumed, loaded with scents of vanilla, cinnamon and cedar, yet placed in near-perfect balance with notes of blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. It could be your grandmother’s mixed-berry crumble but with an added savory edge that includes hints of black olives and dark coffee. Full-bodied and plush, yet structured, this is a rich, velvety wine on the palate, yet one that doesn’t sacrifice length or longevity for immediate pleasure—like the juxtaposition of sweet and savory flavors, they’re somehow able to coexist and remain harmonious throughout.” – JC

IN THE VINEYARD
SPRING BUD BURST

During the early weeks of spring bud burst and new growth can be seen right across the Barossa. The vines, which were all dormant through the winter, respond to the warming weather by bursting with new shoots. This is always an exciting time as it heralds the new season to come and the promise of what the next vintage may hold. The energy that the vine has been storing up through winter reacts to the warmth of spring and pushes the new shoots through the buds. As each variety ripens at different times, so do they go through bud burst at different times. Earlier ripening varieties like Chardonnay see this stage in early spring whilst later ripening varieties such as Mataro or Cabernet can be several weeks later.

In late spring, the vines start growing fast, with early leaf and shoot growth producing bright green leaves and tendrils of the young shoots that will develop into canes.

IN THE WINERY

“ALL THE THINGS” – Jett

The winery crew, with the recent addition of Harry to the team, are busy preparing wines for bottling from the 2023 vintage and the inside word is that there are some exceptional wines from what was a challenging year. We can’t give away all the secrets but there just might be the return of a wine we haven’t made for ten years.

CELLAR DOOR

After completing school in 2019, Harry pursued his passion for mechanics with a Certificate III in Vehicle Mechanical Technology. He has since applied his skills in the wine industry doing vintage at Yalumba and moving to Team Two Hands in 2024 as our new Cellar Hand. Outside of work, Harry is an avid footy enthusiast, proudly playing for the Nuri Tigers and cheering on Collingwood in the AFL (winning team Two Hands’s tipping comp right out of the gate!). When he’s not on the field, you’ll find him unwinding with camping and fishing trips, with Yorke’s being his favourite getaway spot.
