Vintage 2023 continues…
We hope this newsletter finds you well and enjoying the finer things in life, including a glass of Two Hands Wines.
As we move into the autumn season, we want to take a moment to reflect on the 2023 vintage and the exciting things happening at the winery. Richard, Kennedy and their team have been hard at work, crushing, fermenting and pressing the wonderful fruit coming into the winery from across our various growers and vineyards. It has been a late start to this year but the winery is a busy hive of activity right now and the enticing aromas of fermentation are wafting through the building.
“A report from the battle fields of our 2023 harvest, as we continue to work very hard to bring in another strong vintage. The season was marked by a very late start, October and November were unusually wet and very cold. Sadly our vines shot and did not grow due to the cool weather, so the season was delayed by the outset. This has pushed our ripening from the heart of March into April, where the sunlight hours and heat summation have dropped right away. I really like the challenges with a cooler vintage and we have to make a lot of calls in the vineyard to bring in a quality harvest, risk and reward are the order of the day whilst living by constant weather updates and on nervous energy.” – MT

We are also excited to announce that our Cellar Door on the Road program is in full swing from May as we travel around the country for a number of small and large events. WINE OF THE MONTH
LILY’S GARDEN
The first fruit to arrive at the winery at the start of vintage was McLaren Vale Shiraz, so what better way to commemorate vintage 2023 being crushed then to delve deeper into a favourite of everyone’s Lily’s Garden.
Lily’s Garden is the pick of the bunch from our growers McLaren Vale vineyards, their proximity to the sea is reflected in Lily’s blue labelling.
The first vintage of Lily’s Garden was produced in 2000, as one of the first wines in our portfolio and was simply labelled ‘Two Hands McLaren Vale Shiraz’. Proprietor Michael Twelftree’s daughter Lily was born in 2001 and the wine was lovingly renamed ‘Lily’s Garden to complete the series with ‘Bella’s Garden’.
Kennedy completed his winemaking degree at Charles Sturt University, and has worked for fine wine retailer East End Cellars and Adelaide Hills winery Shaw and Smith. His Love for Barossa wines has brought him to Team Two Hands. In his home life, he is kept in line by his two daughters Grace and Audrey, whilst also on the constant lookout for new ways to perfect his pizza-making game.
